Onto the skin… so the candle(light source) is pushing light upward in her face. So shadow will be upward as well. So the light points upwards and creates shadows above the lipand around the eyes. More explanation in the comments… too long to fit

Look at the arms, the shading is rounder because the arm is round as well. Keep that in mind
The pointy part of the nose casts a shadow on the bridge of the nose and the cheebones cast a shadow around the eyes. The lips cast a shadow. So why do you need to know this? Because the face is 3d. You have to understand the shape of the face to shade. At first it is hard but it gets easier. If you color a person like they are 2d, it will look wrong.
